The Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev (Institute of Philology, Department of Theory and Practice of German Translation)

This is one of the largest departments of Translation Studies in Ukraine, with two professors, 13 associate professors and three foreign lecturers (from Germany and Austria). Literary translation, translation of children’s literature and film, scientific and technical translation, terminology and expert languages and language policy belong to the professional interests of our department. The seminar “Theory and Practice of Translation” is held on a monthly basis. The quarterly magazine “Die Brücke” [The Bridge] is published by students and the department has created the magazine “Germanic Philology in Ukraine” (editor-in-chief professor T. Kyiak). The scholarly conferences of the Ukrainian High School German Scholars Union are held annually. Our department has published three monographs, seven course books, nine textbooks and more than 200 scholarly articles.

The members of our department are active participants in eight Bavarian-Ukrainian scholarly conferences. The first domestic course book “Translation Studies (German-Ukrainian)” was recognized as one of the best anniversary issues for the 175th anniversary of the university. Our theatre group has already been invited to perform in Austria.The close relationship with different institutes and representations of Germany and Austria in Ukraine, such as Austrian Development Cooperation Bureau, Central European Institute (Vienna), Ukrainian Free University (Munich, Germany), University of Konstanz (Germany) and Institute of Translation Studies (Graz, Austria) promotes such education.

Dr. Maria Ivanytska

She graduated in German Language and Literary Studies in Chernivtsi. She worked as a German teacher at the University in Chernivtsi and received scholarships to study at the universities in Vienna and Düsseldorf. In 1994 she earned her PhD in German Studies and since 2000 she has been employed at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, she is an associate professor at the Department of Translation for German. She was initiator and coordinator of the DAAD project “Studentische Selbstverwaltung im Vergleich” [Student Self-Government in Comparison] (2010, https://kops.ub.uni-konstanz.de/xmlui/handle/urn:nbn:de:bsz:352-129419), coordinator of the international summer school “Ukrainian Culture” with the University of Graz (2011) as well as a member and coordinator of workshops for translators. Her research interest lies in the field of Translation Studies. From 2011 to 2014 she conducted her postdoctoral research (Habilitation) on the topic of “Language Personality of the Literary Translator”. Maria Ivanytska is the author of 65 academic articles and two books that deal with stylistics and translations; she translates from German into Ukrainian. Since 2013 she is the coordinator of the project TransStar for the Ukraine.

Tetyana Suprun

Her academic studies she completed in German Language and Literature and Ukrainian Law in Kyiv (Ukraine). Her research interest focuses on legal translation and terminology (2004 in Vienna and 2011 in Graz). Since 1999 she works as a German teacher at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Department of Translation). She also works as a freelance interpreter and translator for German. In 2008 and 2009 she organized and coordinated two student theatre projects in cooperation with lectors from Austria (OeAD) and Germany (DAAD). In 2011 and 2012 she organized several cultural projects and literary translation workshops for students. Since 2013 she is PR assistant and operative coordinator of the EU-project “TransStar Europe” in the Ukraine.

Prof. Dr. habil. Taras Kyiak

At the University of Chernivtsi he studied German Language and Literature, obtained his PhD and finished his habilitation. At the universities of Vienna and Munich he conducted research. Since 2003 he is head of Department of Translation for German at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv with interests in science of terminology, translation studies, cultural and language the­ory. Taras Kyjak is member of many international research organizations and scientific councils, the former head of the interparliamentary group “Ukraine-Germany” within the Parliament of Ukraine and author of over 250 academic publications.

The Goethe Institute is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with a global reach. It promotes the German language abroad, cultivates international cultural cooperation and transmits a comprehensive picture of Germany via information on the cultural, social and political life.
Also in Ukraine the Goethe Institute works in close cooperation with local partners and partner institutions. A comprehensive network of language learning centers, partner libraries and partner schools plays a central role.
Within the framework of the «information and library work» the Goethe Institute has already for many years been active in the advancement of translation and the education and training of translators. With the help of the «Special Program Translation Grants Ukraine» — a cooperative project between the SOROS Foundation Ukraine, the German Embassy in Kiev and the Goethe Institute Ukraine – approximately 100 German books were translated into Ukrainian between 2004 and 2012 and published. Workshops and seminars on translation issues are catered especially  towards young translators and have become an essential part of the course offering at the library for years now. In addition to education and training, the objective for Ukrainian translators is to have a better ability to network amongst each other and with their professional colleagues from other countries.

Susanne Teichmann

Susanne Teichmann studied German Studies, History, Librarianship and Information Technology in Hamburg. After graduating in her degrees she has worked for the Goethe- Institute e.V. as an expatriate and has lived and worked in Tel Aviv, Beijing (China), Sofia, Zagreb and Madrid. Since September 2013 she heads the section „Information and Library“ of the Goethe-Institute Ukraine in Kiev.
Her key activities are library and information work and the coordination of cultural and educational projects within the framework of foreign cultural policy, specifically in the areas of bibliology, publishing, literary and translation grants. In the project TransStar she is responsible for quality development, quality control and the evaluation of the entire project.

From 2004 until 2008 she completed her degree in German Studies and World Literature at the Pedagogical Dragomanow University in Kiev. In 2010 she finished her M.A. in Politics at the National Kiev-Mohyla Academy and at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. Since 2010 she works at the Goethe Institute Ukraine in the section „Information and Library“ and works in projects in the areas of librarianship, publishers training, translation grants and „social media“. Within the framework of the project „Meeting-Point Library“ she leads a theatre group for children.
She is mentor of the social volunteering projects of the organization „Workshop of Civic Engagement“.
In the project TransStar she is responsible for the operative organization and PR for the Goethe Institute.
